Airport Security In the United States, the National Transportation and Safety Board is charged with making sure that no weapons make their way onto airplanes. I do not generally carry weapons around with me so I do not really worry about it when I fly. I do carry certain tools with me though. I recently flew out of Charlotte-Douglas International airport to Orlando Florida. I had no problem going through security with my carry on luggage. I passed through a metal detector and my luggage was scanned separately as well. I boarded, and had a nice flight. The return journey through the Orlando airport security was a bit different. The NTSB down there were a bit more diligent. When my carry on luggage passed through the scanner something in there prompted them to pull me aside and search my bag. Inside they found a 3" pocket knife, a multi-tool that also had a 3" blade, two pairs of scissors, and two butane lighters. All of them were banned items. All of them passed through similar detectors in Charlotte a few days before and flew with me in the cabin of the airplane. I had never given them a second thought. When I told them that all of that stuff was in my possession on the earlier flight, they laughed and shrugged their shoulders. In June, I flew the same stuff out of Charlotte to Philidelphia and back again without detection at either airport. Obviously NTSB training is not uniform as yet throughout the land. |

The chances are the earlier detector was a] faulty, b] not turned up high or c] not even on.It is common practise to turn them off to allow boarding time targets to be met.At the end of the day airports are a business, and the money does the talking.Yes even now.

I remember helping with the first wave of screeners, for a uniformed operation, was chaos. I AGree with AmberSolaire it is all about money and time tables.

Actually only one of the three shrugged his shoulders in Orlando. The other two raised their arms a la Rocky and shook their fists. Perhaps there is a bit more pride in the Orlando unit. That manager will be getting a promotion before long I predict.

If you people only knew what shit makes it on planes. I worked for a airline. If anything it's very easy to get something in the cargo hold and the goverment does not require any searches for air cargo. Homeland sec is a joke.

Last year when we were flying out of Cleveland I tried to take a golf club on the plane with me. It was a gift from my father in-law for my son. Since the club did not fit in the suitcase I put it into a carry on paper bag. They wouldn't let me take on the plane. I had to check it in separately. Bout this airport security stuff...The larger the airport {traffic} the higher the security. That could have been why they picked up on the knives. LOL, try doing that at Hartsfield, you might make the front page of the newspaper. In my opinion, yes some of this airport security stuff is stupid but ya know what... I don't want to see another 911. Picking up on every other pocket knife or every other butane lighter is going to make my flying safer every other time.

I fly out of South Bend Regional airport here in Indiana. I've never had a problem with either the bazooka or my flame thrower. Chicago O'hare...different story. You need to buy a permit stamp for the bazooka. Seriously, both are as lax as Charolette. Scary indeed. [blog talldarkavg1]

When you check in less than half an hour before a flight, you get flagged as a high-risk traveler. This happened to me a year or so ago, and I had to go through the "special" screening. For years I carried a small folding tool on my keychain with a bottle opener and a dull, rusted, half-inch blade. The security screener found it on my key ring, and I had to give it up. I heard about a guy who carries a large, self-addressed, stamped envelope in his briefcase. If he gets to security without having put his pocketknife in his checked luggage, he drops it in the envelope, seals it, and mails it to himself. Sizzle, I think it may have something to do with the WEATHER there. TJ

It is oversight redswallow. I wasn't really paying attention. I always carry a knife and wasn't thinking about security. In any event, I just heard on the news that the banned items in US airports will be relaxed. Lighters, scissors and pocket knives will be allowed again as personal items. It seems they want to focus on finding guns. They began to realize that an enormous amount of time (ie. money), was being spent on prohibiting items that realisticly posed little danger. Happy flying everyone!

I spent the summer of 2003 traveling between Detroit and St Louis about every other week. One day, the TSA supervisor looks at me and says "There anything in this bag you want to tell us about?" Nope, nothing. "You sure? No weapons?" Nope, nothing like that. So, he starts digging through my toiletries bag, gets a grin on his face, rearranges a couple things and runs it back through Xray. Once he's done he says "Your electric toothbrush and your electric razor were positioned so that they looked like a gun." Funniest trip through the airport I ever had... better watch out I'm armed with a .22 calibre Braun toothbrush with Panasonic Shaver grips!

Keith, a similar thing happened to me. When I left for Seattle, flying out of Sky Harbor in Phoenix I emptied my pockets when going through security, and they confiscated my two Bic lighters. When I arrived in Seattle, I bought a cheap lighter. Upon my flight out of Seattle airport, again I emptied my pockets and placed the lighter in the little tray and it went through without a word. After it was scanned, I picked it up and put it in my pocket. I just feel that not all the airports have the same rules. My son flew out of the San Diego airport on the same day I returned from Seattle and he said they never took his lighters. I was surprised with this one, since it was so close to a military base. *shrug* DustStormDiva
