Amazing Autumn Facts
Amazing Autumn Facts Autumn, also known as Fall is my favourite season. The air is cool enough for a sweater and the days get shorter. This year, Fall officially arrives on Wednesday, September 22, 2021. In its honour, here are some fun and interesting facts that you may not know: The Fall Equinox occurs when the sun crosses the celestial equator. The word equinox comes from the Latin words "aequus," which means "equal," and "nox," which means night. On the first day of autumn, the autumnal equinox has 12 hours of daylight and 12 hours of darkness. Both Fall and Autumn are correct English terms for the season preceding winter. Autumn is primarily used in British English, while fall is a term more frequently used in American English. Meteorologists use a different method of defining the first day of fall. And, in some countries, the beginning of the seasons is determined by average temperatures rather than fixed dates or astronomical events. When days become shorter, animals in high altitudes experience biological changes. One of the weirdest examples is found in the male Siberian hamster, whose testicles swell almost 17 times their normal size, in preparation for mating according to Mother Nature Network. You may gain weight. When the days shorten and cool, we are not outside as much in the sunshine (the primary source of Vitamin D for most people) and that reduces fat breakdown and triggers fat storage. You can stand an egg on one end during the Fall Equinox, but it has nothing to do with the changing of the season. Some believe the reason eggs can be balanced on one end most likely has to do with tiny bumps on the end of the shell that "act like little legs holding the egg up." Since 1997, Autumn has been one of the top 100 names for girls in the United States. According to Swedish studies, women lose more hair in the fall. Hair cells are also the body’s second-fastest-growing cells (after bone marrow) and are sensitive to environmental changes including seasonal variations. Fall babies are better students. Human born in autumn (September through December) are more likely to excel in school than those born at other times of the year, according to a UK Department of Education report. Fall babies are more likely to live longer. born between September and November are more likely to live to be 100 than those born at other times of the year, according to a University of Chicago study of 1,500 centenarians. Monarch butterflies travel at speeds of between 12 and 25 miles per hour. They are the only insect that migrates up to 2,500 miles for nicer weather. While heart attacks and automobile accidents rise in the spring following the commencement of daylight saving time, the converse is true in the fall: heart attacks and accidents plummet the Monday after daylight saving time ends. In the fall, both men’s and women’s testosterone levels are at their peak. Scientists believe the increase is the consequence of old mating impulses (e.g., the fall “rutting season”) or that it is triggered by diminishing daylight. According to scientists, men evolved to be sexually stimulated by food, making the harvest season in fall an excellent time to locate a partner and breed. According to research, a combination of pumpkin pie and doughnuts enhanced penile flow by 20%. The use of a pumpkin pie-lavender mixture improved penile blood flow by 40%. September is the most popular birth month of the year. |

Tough choice for me between Spring and Fall. In the spring, the greening of earth, the promise of warmer temperatures, the opportunity to be outside more. In the Fall, the crispness of the air, the colors of the leaves and the under brush, cozy fires to warm the heart and soul.

I think that the start of the season depends greatly on latitude. At 43 North and 90 West (about where I am) I consider the season to change on the first of the month that has the solstice or equinox. Thus, for me, fall started September 1. Not that we have not some rather warm days this month, but I while the air conditioning ran most of August, I doubt that it will be required more than 10 days this month. I like spring the best. New life, flora and fauna. Then fall, winter and summer. Fall as that is harvest and leaf changes. Winter as I enjoy cross country skiing and the sleep of the perennials that is often necessary for them to set fruit the next year. Summer is last as I could do not enjoy the extremely hot and humid days. (But if not for the humidity, we would not have rain.) There are more things I like about every season than I dislike, and, as Joanie Mitchell sings, "you don't know what you have until it is gone". And you do not know what to enjoy if you never have conditions that you do not enjoy.

oh wow! those are amazing facts! I was not expecting the hamster fact! I feel a little more "blue" and not as happy during the fall. My favorite time of year is late Spring heading towards Summer. I know I feel more inspired and creative during the month May. After the spring showers and warming of the days.

Sooo, the hamster thing . . . that's kinda . . . uhmmm . . . different? When the going gets weird, the weird turn pro. The only thing we have to fear is fear itself.

If you think about the Sept. birthday thing, I can totally agree with that. It really means that moms and pops are "getting it done" in Dec. What else is there to do in Dec. but screw your brains out. I wonder if that fact is true for places where it is warm all year around?

I love Fall most of all. Even though the show is short It beautiful to watch It the end of spring and summer Time for trees to rest for winter The last of the hummingbird Are flying bye getting a quick drink We know they are not the 6 we have All summer for they check out the feeder And all the surrounding. The send and fly off The bees are active in all the wild flowers Full of pollen and squirrels are collecting pine cone Grass is slowing down don't have to cut as much In a week or two cut my last time put it away. Take out the snow thrower. Pool is fine it's 49 degrees this morning Water temp is 69 a number I like But not for swimming. The dogs still want to go. Hope you enjoy your Fall xoxoxo
