Race Matters?
Race Matters? I've always been interested by acts of discrimination toward minorities overseas western countries. Everywhere I've heard stories of Blacks Vs Whites, Asians struggling against oppression, Jews and Muslims being targeted and I wonder, why can't we all get along? I come from a country where we have two major areas (Coastal & Highlands), four regions, twenty two provinces, and over 800 different languages belonging to people who all look different and have different beliefs from each other (Even if they're from the same area). With such a mix of people existing in one place, there is bound to be some sort of racism between ourselves. Does racism exist in PNG? I dare say yes, and not because of expatriates who look down on us, but locally we do criticize, look down on and generally dislike people from a different places in our own country. I admit that I too felt like this, a lot of times I've been critical of people because it was "typical of people from that area", mainly because my parents instilled those ideas into me. But I've learned to get past that as part of my evolution, not to judge a book by it's cover, accept someone for who they are, and treat others as you would have them treat you. So yes we do have a ways to go, but we are getting there. Although "racism" does exist, we learn to live together and get along because part of the PNG way is that the survival of the community is bigger than your own differences, if you cannot show love, at least tolerance, never hate. Hopefully the rest of the world can learn from this. |
