Fresh snow
Fresh snow It was warmer today- sixteen- but windy and snowing, and it felt colder than yesterday. It snowed fine cold powder almost all day and there's a freshness to a new snow. It covers everything in a clean new blanket and changes the look and feel of the forest. The frigid air clarifies at the same time that the snow highlights the complexity of the woods. Hiking during a snowfall is magical like the storybooks of my childhood. Now and then the wind dislodges the snow caught in the treetops and it comes showering down in a fog, stinging your face, waking you. If you walk the same trails day after day you see the changes in the forest and the meadows daily. The creek channel is getting more narrow again, the little beeches in the groves by the marsh keep their leaves through winter and each leaf is carrying a a handful of snow. The snow isn't deep enough for snowshoes and it was slippery and tough going on the hills and slopes. PD and I got winded but Gracie takes it all in stride, gliding along with her nose in the cold air, vacuuming up the scent on the wind. Become a member now and get a free tote bag. |

She did get a little fazed. A limb- really not much more than a stick- loaded with oak leaves had blown down in the path along the swamp. The leaves were fluttering in the wind and crackling faintly and she didn't recognize it in the new snow. She was shy of it, but she followed me instead of leading me up to it and at the last minute she was all "Oh yeah, I knew all along what that was. It's just a branch." I laughed at her and she ignored me. Become a member now and get a free tote bag.

I have snowshoes! And skis! So no amount is too much. The young dogs plow ahead through the snow- they have the energy for it and they don't know any better. My older dogs followed me. They let me break trail with the snowshoes. They all have an annoying habit of stomping on the trailing end of skis and making me fall down. Then of course they'd all pile on me, trying to steal my hat. I had a hood with a fake fur rimmed face hole and the turds ate it off after they had knocked me down. Seriously, unless there is something dangerous- an ongoing blizzard, ice that's too treacherous to stand up on- how could there be too much snow? You just go slower and more carefully. I've seen dogs jump and play in the snow, but I've never seen one lay in the snow like your one pic. Gracie must really love that snow! Gracie is one of those dogs who think: "Snow! My favorite! Rain! My favorite! Hot sunshine! My favorite!" The Tao of Gracie. Become a member now and get a free tote bag.

If I knew that I wouldn't have been stuck driving a truck for forty years, I'd have been a drug sniffing dog! Well, OK , i did some of that anyway, but I never got paid for it. She smells things we have no idea are near- critters, other dogs, people, who has passed that way earlier, the marsh. A dog's nose is a powerful organ. they can detect illness with it, explosives, drugs....you name it! Become a member now and get a free tote bag.
