Lucky

We had a nice packed trail today, easy to walk on. We still took an hour and a half walking our circuit at Al Sabo. PD took the lead with Gracie and I poked along looking at the settling snow. It looks like a thick downy blanket draped over the tree limbs, soft and plump like a geisha. If you get up close and look at it you can see that the leading edge is fjord like, with outlying crystals of snow desperately clinging to the main clump. That smooth soft edge is really a bit ragged and tenuous, and the whole thing will come crashing down soon, and pack itself into ice on the ground.

We met Gracie's friend on the hike home. I had misunderstood his name- it's Lucky, not Rocky, and he's a little bit decrepit border Collie. He is patient with her youthful exuberance- for a while- and he was glad to see her. They played for a while, but he has a pretty bad case of arthritis and he got tired soon, and told her so! We let them both run loose and Gracie tore around us all in circles trying to drum up some enthusiasm for a chase but she didn't get any takers.

Gracie behaved quite well- the more I let her run free the more she earns my trust. She obeys better when free than on the lead, I think. I'll have to start giving her more off leash time. I do wish we had an old soldier like Lucky to hike with for an hour or so a day, even two or three days a week. He's very savvy and wise and could teach her a good deal more than I can. He also is quite good at putting her in her place when she goes overboard- he isn't shy about snarling at her and saying "Enough!" You might not be able to teach an old new tricks but there's no better teacher for a pup than an old dog.

Lucky IS a sweet dog! He's real smart and very friendly. He's good for Gracie too. He's no curmudgeon but he doesn't put up with any girly shit either.

Indeed it was. We had a great hike. PD's learning the camera- she took some pretty good photos today. She took the last four.

Me too! I've had all those Malemutes and i was getting to where I thought they were the only "real dogs"...kind of like the "Real Americans" we hear about from certain politicians...lol. But this one grew on me. She is one smart girl and her enthusiasm is contagious. And she has smart eyes. You can see her sizing things up in her eyes.

a lot of wisdom in your statement about older dogs teaching young dogs. They can do in weeks what would take us years! Nice pics as always
I've seen them do it. The older dogs teach them that you come when called. They teach them that you are the boss, that they defer to you. They show them how to hunt, and how to wait for the right moment to pounce. When the young 'uns get out of line the older dogs slap 'em down.

The Pad Wax is working very well, by the way. I rub it on before we leave the house, and she tries to lick it off. (I think it tickles when I'm rubbing it in.) Only the one application is fine for our hikes- an hour and a half to two hours.

We've had 2 other dogs while we've had Izzy and she really enjoyed the company. Both were small dogs, one ran away, the other we gave away to 2 old lesbians who practically begged for her. They didn't need to, I wanted her gone.
We're still thinking about another dog. If we can get the right older dog, we'll do that. Otherwise we might just get another pup.

Thanks! It's hit or miss trying to get a picture of that bitch! She is a temperamental model, that's for sure. The biggest trouble is, she won't hold still. She was hunting today, burying her face in the snow and by the time I got in position and had her dialed in, she'd up and take off. I swear the little turd does it on purpose.

We're starting to get some snow. If it stays cold it could build into winter! Last year we had ten feet- we've got some catch up to do.

And they're good at it, too! I was watching them run and chase in the dog park with very few slips and slides- natural athletes!

Can you tell when Gracie likes one dog more than another dog?

Yeah, she makes it pretty clear. When we go to the dog park it's especially apparent. She's not especially aggressive, and when the other dog is pushy she backs right off. But some dogs she just warms right up to and wants to run and play. She's always been impressed with Lucky...I think she prefers the boys...there's a black Great Dane she likes a lot, too, and a Standard Poodle.

She has her tender moments. Mostly she's wired for action but she likes to cuddle now and then.

For a few months now, I reckon. She was so poorly behaved at first and I couldn't turn her loose. But she's calming down now and paying better attention to her manners.

She smells things under the snow and dogs can sense critters moving under snow- mice, shrews, voles. I don't know that it's all scent- I think it's a combination of senses. They're just good at it. Gracie doesn't catch much but she wrecks a lot of nests. You've seen films of foxes and coyotes pouncing in the matted grass and deep snow, right? I've had dogs who were pretty successful at it. I watched my Malemute Annie catch and eat six or eight mice in an hour doing that.
