Young Love in Winter

Today was thirty degrees and overcast. We haven't hiked at Asylum Lake for a while so we took our walk there. We had only been at the preserve for fifteen or twenty minutes when the sun began breaking through and it became a gorgeous January day.

We skirted the northern edge of the prairie and headed down the hill to the lake. There were seven or eight guys out ice fishing and as soon as Gracie spotted them she wanted to join them. By the time we reached the access beach there were only a few wisps of cloud in the sky and the sun was quite warm.

It was a magnificent day for a walk and we met a wonderful young couple walking along with their arms around each other. I took quite a few pictures of them and promised to print copies for them. it turns out he visits Al Sabo every night to keep track of the water level at the land bridge, and they each work at stores which we frequent, so we will see them again. In fact, we'll look for them- they were both very nice ....and she was adorable!

We spent about an hour and forty minutes at the Preserve, and Gracie hunted mice and went wild on the prairie as we trekked through the center of it headed for the car. I was a little surprised there weren't more hikers in the warm weather, but there was a breeze that had some sting in it and that might have kept people away.

Heh... and won't they be surprised where their photo ended up...

No, no, they're quite unrecognizable. And once again I thank you for the nature walk photography.

Had a chance to hike recently -- nothing much, just a little jaunt along the cliffs of New Jersey, overlooking my much-loved island -- but I had it vividly reinforced how much I enjoy the activity...

The walk started out a bit crisp with the wind, but once we went down through the woods to the lake it was a lovely day for a walk.

Do you think I should charge those fishermen for showcasing them here?

I'd like to spend some time at the Palisades myself. The East often gets short shrift for natural beauty since the west has those long empty vistas, but I like the Eastern United States. Imagine how lovely the island must have been once....New York is a beautiful state, and northern New Jersey, too.

Could Gracie be any more gorgeous?
I don't think so. The boys sure seem to like her. We met a yellowLab last week at Al Sabo and he tried humping her twice in about three minutes. He was fourteen months old- close to her age- and fancied himself quite the stud. She looked pretty confused. We haven't had "The Talk" yet.

Is Gracie pointing at the couple, the fishermen, or the red berries? We made it to 60 degrees today.
It was the fishermen. She loves that lake and even frozen she wanted to be out on it. I was the one pointing at the young couple. I was quite taken with them. He's a hell of a nice young guy and she is petite and beautiful.

If the boy dogs are tryin' t' bang her, that talk is past due.
The dog's owner was pretty embarrassed but I didn't care- it's what dogs do. Gracie though was looking frantically from side to side like "What the fuck?!" She is spayed so no problem, but it's a social dominance thing- you see subordinate dogs trying to hump others. In a year she will get pissed off at that kind of thing but she's still young now. I remember a dog trying to hump one of my female Malemutes once- he'd have needed stitches if I hadn't been there to pull her off him. She was displeased.

Where do you think the phrase "I'll huff and I'll puff" came from? It wasn't about sniffing glue and smoking dope.

I wish we would get some sunshine here in GA. It's been gloomy and rainy for over a week.
November and December are our gloomiest months. We usually get some sun again in January- this year it's been a pretty month.

When I lived in the country I did that too. We're on different sleep cycles and sometimes I walk our property late at night. I'm glad you reminded me of that- I haven't hiked at night for a long time, and I might just start now that you brought it up.

Asylum Lake is a very interesting name for a lake. Do you know how it got its name?

Kalamazoo was the first town in Michigan to be selected for a state asylum for the insane, in the late 1850s and early 1860s, and they established farm colonies around the lake. Across the street from the preserve is an ancient orchard, the Old Colony Orchard. In the middle twentieth century there was a move away from large institutions and both the farms and the hospital were allowed to decline and decay. Western Michigan University now owns the properties. They were deeded to be parkland in perpetuity, but the University has enough influence with legislators that they simply nullify past contracts. The Old Colony Orchard is next on the list for development.

Well, I look like a Pillsbury Doughboy crusted with dirt when I get all wrapped up for hiking. Definitely not the Dos Equis man. We have inner beauty, that young man and I.
