More snowshoeing

Yesterday we had warm weather- twenty seven degrees- and we snowshoed again at Al Sabo. We hiked our favorite trail, the circuit through the meadow and then north to Portage Creek, then back south alongside the marsh. There had been a bit more traffic, quite a few skiers and a lot of other snowshoers, and even some hikers. The creek is till flowing downstream from the landbridge, and there is a small open pool upstream right at the culvert, but out in the open marsh it's thinly frozen over. Gracie was on her best behavior. We were out two hours, starting at around three. She got even better behaved as we got further up the trail. We were tired and I think for once she was actually tired herself! We finished off the lasagna when we got home. There's nothing wrong with lasagna three days in a row, right? Two hours on the snowshoes wore us both out and we each hit the sheets early. I was asleep before two AM.

She's been a gas ever since we brought her home. And you're right- she LOVES snow. Me too.
We hadn't had lasagna in ages...years, I think, and I lobbied for it. PD makes great lasagna and this one was extra good.

Nice! I have a dog that burrows in the snow...or used to.

There is a difference between a good BJ and a bad BJ.

There are days like that, when the hike wears you out and instead of sacking out you slouch there draped over your chair like a limp dishrag.
And I LOVE lasagna- pasta, iItalian sausage and cheese- what's not to like?

Nothing wrong with Lasagna 3 days in a row. Some food gets better the longer it's fridged. I think we have very different ideas of getting to bed early. I was in bed at 9pm.
I used to do that when I was working- I had to get up early for work. But my internal clock says bedtime is three AM and I regularly sleep till eleven. I don't much like it, but that's what my brain wants. I've been taking time release melatonin to try to reset that clock. It's helping a little.

The weather in this part of Michigan is nothing if not mercurial. Last year we had sustained cold and none of the snow ever melted, it just piled up. This year it's been up and down and all over the place.
I carried my lunch to work and I think I had salami and cheese on rye for about ten years straight.

Yeah- they smell and hear and see stuff that we miss, even under the snow. She doesn't catch much under there, but I've had dogs who were pretty good at hunting that way.

We have times like that her too. The year I graduated from high school it rained every day in July.
We are lucky, and we take advantage of it.

I see a wind turbine. They're quite controversial here, but I think they're great - functional and strangely aesthetic though they may be kill the odd bird!

Maybe it's just me feeling all fluffy after my leisure bath ... but I could swear that the 4th last picture looks like there's bunnies and frogs in the river ...

Kalamazoo Valley Community is adjacent to the preserve- they offer classes for wind power technicians, and have erected a couple of turbines at the school. I briefly contemplated a career change, because i like the idea of wind energy too. But I'm scared of heights. I could build or transport components but you'd have to truss me and haul me up on a tower against my will- I'd never go up there voluntarily.

Pixie, I'm feeling a little fluffy myself just hearing about your leisure bath. I believe I'll take a break and just think about that for a while.
The clumps of snow...now that you mention it, it does look like frogs and bunnies. Cold ones.

She's definitely not bored, or boring. I think we actually tired her out a bit that day!
I've got another three months before I have to start thinking about mowing anything. I don't care for lawn mowing- I'd rather move snow. I didn't mind mowing my place in the country with my Ford, but I'm not a big fan of small engine noise. I want to build an electric lawn tractor.

Looks like Gracie saw the MOAB sign & is trying to dig a foxhole post haste. LOL!
I'm not sure who named the trails in the Preserve- I always figured it was the Boy Scouts next door. Some of them are descriptive- Lookout, Atwater (for the pond). But I don't know what the hell they were thinking with Moab and Tibet.
That girl does spend a lot of time diving into the snow!

Four or five. I've got what they call delayed sleep phase syndrome. Everything has to have a phase and a syndrome these days. All that means is that my internal clock says three AM is bedtime and eleven AM is get up time. I did OK for forty years adapting to my work schedule. It was up at four thirty AM and sleep at nine PM. But I might have functioned better on my own natural cycle- i just never knew that I had a different natural schedule until I retired, and suddenly I couldn't sleep at what I thought was bedtime. I'm taking some time release melatonin to try to re-set my clock a little bit, and it's sort of working- I'm not up at four and five AM anymore, and some nights I can actually go to sleep at one.
And thank you! I think she's pretty too.

I tried different sleeping pills, but I hated them. I was still awake late, most of the time, but I couldn't walk a straight line. And if they did put me to sleep I didn't feel rested and I was a zombie the next day. I went to a sleep clinic and they said "There's nothing wrong with you, you're just not on everyone else's schedule. You can't fix it, so live with it- here, try these pills. They won't work a miracle but if you're lucky you can adjust your sleep time by an hour, maybe two." I can't explain how much better it made me feel. I really thought there was something weird wrong with me. And, there probably is, but it isn't my sleeping habits. It's most likely something much darker.....more sinister....

We had freezing drizzle Sunday. The trails were a skating rink.
