The World in Black and White

Unknown
"Black and White" Is The Topic For The Fifteenth Virtual Symposium

The World in Black and White by Bill

When the Symposium voters chose black and white as the topic for the Fifteenth Virtual Symposium the first place my mind went was straight to race, as I’m sure it did for a lot of people. I have things to say about that, but I’m none too certain that I have anything new to say, and I’m even less certain that it would be anything very helpful- I mean, that has not been said before and didn’t help the other hundred times either. The second thing that crossed my mind was black and white photography.

I love black and whites, but I’m no student of the art. I don’t know a lot about it, I just know what I like. I was born in the age of the color photo, but it wasn’t available for casual users and still cost a lot more, so my family took color photos on special occasions as they became possible, but usually they saved their money and weren’t at all troubled by it. All the old photos we had were black and white, and quite a few were Daguerrotypes. I can’t recall seeing a color photo in my family’s collection that dated from before the late fifties. Kodacolor film came along in 1942 but roll film for shapshot cameras didn’t make an appearance till 1958.

That seems very strange to me now, in the time of digital cameras that don’t require film and computer generated images. In 1927 the great French filmmaker Abel Gance created a panoramic motion picture scene of Napoleon reviewing Le Grand Armee using three synchronized cameras that astounded and delighted moviegoers by recording the Emperor riding across the screen nearly seamlessly from one screen to the next. It was quite a cinematic coup. Gance used color filters too, that tinted the entire screen, but true color was a way off yet.

Looking at all those old black and white photos as a , and watching nearly every movie in black and white, I was aware that color film was a big deal but I wasn’t sure how or when it had come along. I was also a bit confused by it. I had developed the idea that life had once been in black and white, and I remember asking my mother when color had first made its debut, and how excited had she been. It took a bit of discussion for me to make myself understood. She began by trying to remember the first color films she was aware of, and said that of course she marveled at them , and was excited to go to the theater to see them. But eventually I made myself understood- that I imagined that life itself was black and white and that as in “The Wizard of Oz” mankind had suddenly emerged into a world of color that was as astounding to them as the advent of color films actually was- as astounding at the first automobiles and airplanes. She looked at me as if she had given birth to a moron, but she patiently explained- after the shock of what I was asking had worn off- that yes, life has always been in color for most people, since the beginning of time.

Black and white photography is now limited in its use to artistic types. It’s employed to make a statement, to lend a certain ambience or render a film or photo somehow antique. It can soften an image or make it more harsh than a color rendering. The world today is in color. But looking at the old family photos takes me back to that mythical time in my childish brain when the past was in black and white, and my forbears did not enjoy the blessing of green apples and red lips, and had not yet beheld the wonder of an azure sky. It seems contradictory, but that time feels somehow warmer and safer to me still. Some childish things are apparently never completely put away.

I do too. These pictures are priceless to me. Some of these people I knew personally, and some I never met. Finding a picture of a long dead ancestor is better than finding gold!

Thanks! Nearly as soon as the topic was picked I thought of all these old photos. I have too many to scan I think, but I'm still working on it.

Thank you Pet. the old woman, Sarah, was born in 1789 and pioneered in Ohio and Illinois. Her sister in law Deborah and all Deborah's children were killed in Tecumseh's War, in 1812, and Sarah's husband Jonathan was killed a few months later at the Battle of Wildcat Creek. Her brother Isaac was killed in battle at Fort Harrison in 1813. She made her way back to Ohio with the help of her Uncle Sam, remarried, and lived to the ripe old age of eighty four.

He had tried his hand at a lot of things. He was a shortstop, bootlegger, gas station owner, cafe operator and real estate agent and speculator. He finished up on the board of directors of a small local bank and left a pretty decent estate. Not so bad for the first generation son of an Italian copper miner. He had a lot of stories to tell- some of them were even true.

It is funny your grand parents were Winnie and Fred for isn't Winnie short for Winifred? I had an aunt Winnie(short for Winifred). I don't look like her at all but I have a similar mind. She was a poet. I would love to have some photos of my grandparents etc. I have never seen a photo of my grandfather who was over 6 feet with my grandmother who was right around 5 feet. My father and all his siblings are long since passed and I do not know if any of my cousins have the photographs. I will ask. Thank you for jarring my mind on this topic Kzoo. I know you love photography and have enjoyed many of your photos of nature. Hope you continue that hobby.
Thank you! My grandmother was indeed Winifred, and she was colorful if not precisely poetic! She had an out of wedlock child in 1925 and went to a home for fallen women in Kansas City. She hated it there and two of her sisters traveled to KC and busted her out. The home already had an adoptive family for the child and insisted on it being returned to them. My grandfather Eli told them to go to hell- "He's ours and we're keeping him!"

Very nice post. I always wonder about the lives of the people I see in old black and white photos. There is often so much expressed in a photo.

Thanks. I always wonder too. I know the stories of these people and so many of them were really interesting. When I see old photos I want to know their stories too.

This was not an easy topic.
I'm sure I will be astounded by the brilliance of everyone else.
I, on the other hand, thought on my own experience with black and white.
Hm.
Well done young man,

Nicely done. How fortunate you are to have those photos. We also have many black and white photographs (not as old as yours) and we didn't really get color film until the 60s. I prefer old films in black and white, not colorized.

I thought of race relations first too. How can you help not to, with it in the news nearly every day.
Thank you sweetheart.

Racism is not only in the news every day, It's woven into the fabric of our history. The Dutch delivered the first black slaves to America in 1619, a year before the first settlements in Massachusetts. African Americans have deeper roots here than most European Americans. which makes the early "Back to Africa" movements even more insulting. My own family is tied up in it too, from the slave owning Virginia Wades to the Quaker abolitionists. Americans are still loathe to admit that bigotry and exploitation are an integral part of who and what we are.

But that seemed like too much to write about. I didn't have the energy to do it justice, and it's thoroughly depressing to have to confront your demons, at this time of year especially. Maybe another time.

Thank you dear. I figured this topic was open to lots of different viewpoints, and easy to tweak. I took the easy way out. I'm not sure if I was the only little kid to think what I did about color in the world, but I know I've never met anyone else who's willing to own up to it! To write about racism just made me weary even thinking about it. Sometimes I despair that we will ever repair the damage.

Great take on such a broad subject!

I have been learning some about the history of photography. Absolutely fascinating.

I had to take a look at my oldest photographs to see if they contained any black and whites. .. Nope. ..
I wouldn't have been trusted with such priceless heirlooms. (And wisely so.)
But I did just get a "baby book" passed to me from a grandmother. They look like mostly Kodachrome or Polaroid.

The first "photographers" were quite innovative with what they could find and they found a variety of interesting solutions to the things we take for granted these days.

Read my diary Journal of a Taxi Driver for taxi stories and pictures of flowers and trees.

When I first started taking photo's, way back in the early 80's, I shot everything in black and white because it was cheaper. I loved the depth and details captured in the shades of gray. Great post.

Thanks! There are a lot of ways to go with this topic. But I seem to be the only little kid who ever thought that the world didn't have color before 1939. There were color movies before that...but hell, what little kid is logical? The world looks a lot like magic.

Thanks! I've been thinking about family a lot lately. I had already kind of decided to write this, but I hadn't written anything. Then yesterday my wife and I went to see the movie "In the Heart of the Sea". Probably the easiest branch of my family to trace is the whaling family Coffin of Nantucket, and a Coffin, Owen Coffin, fictionalized as Henry Coffin, was a character featured n the movie. I hadn't expected that, but it cemented my decision. Melville himself had sailed on a Coffin ship, and my cousin Owen Coffin was a sailor on the Essex. The real Owen was eaten, and that's the reason a lot of us are on this site...to get eaten. So we come full circle.

We have big boxes of these old photos. The best ones have notes on the back explaining who's pictured. A lot of others are just mysteries.
