Re-post: About The How We Met posts

As usual, mcmaniac was my muse. He suggested that I write these posts the first time, and we were talking today and he'd said he'd like to read them again, and that a lot of the newer people have never seen them. So I'm reposting these three pieces, since I never get tired of praising my wife, and I really want to impress upon members that you just can't give up. You never know what's going to happen and you have to be open to it when it does.

About The How We Met posts

mcmaniac asked about a week ago if I'd be interested in posting about how my wife PD and I met. I have commented about it in other folks' blogs, and I've alluded to it in posts here in my own blog, but I never really told the story. How we recall events can be really interesting- look at the different perspectives on what happened in Ferguson, Missouri. People witness an event and recall what they saw, but often when a video recording is played that doesn't appear to be what happened. Or they witness an event and they remember the version stored in their brain but they get to hanging around with someone who interprets that same event differently, maybe with a certain slant, and a new version supplants the one stored up in the mind and takes over- and the old version is gone. This isn't about attempting to deceive. It's about how our brains and our memories work. People who record testimony know this already. Cops, insurance agents, court recorders- all kinds of people do this for a living and they have to get kind of skeptical of people's memories, and their ability to accurately recall what actually happened. You can ask six witnesses and get six different answers.

This is not a serious issue in a "how we met" story. This ain't Ferguson, Missouri or The War Between the States. I don't think there'll be any protests, or any grand juries. Unless my ex-wife gets wind of it. But I got to thinking that it might be fun to do a "he said, she said' pair of posts, and see what happened. So we did. They follow- the next post is hers and mine finishes up below that.

It is, you know? I was on this site a couple of months before, and didn't meet anyone. I quit here and we met on the now defunct Y*hoo Person*ls.

It is fairly well know that eyewitness testimony is pretty unreliable for various reasons. Preconceived notions, personal gain and other human error situations. It will be interesting to read your accounts. . . . Will the goats be telling their story?

A little Rashomon is good for the soul. I'm glad you're re-posting these, too. One can always gain something by rereading the classics.

And... it's nice to see some writing from PD again, even if she did grace us with a new post not too long ago...

The goats are unreliable storytellers. And they came along later. They don't know shit, so don't listen to them.

Thank you HG. At the time we wrote these, there were as usual so many different accounts of a single event, interpreted and then reinterpreted ad nauseam, all with the conviction of absolute truth. It sounded like fun to try this, so we did.

I want her to write more too, but she's in reading mode. Sulking doesn't help- I've tried it.

They are squealing just like the pigs did. They had pictures. It's gonna get ugly, they want their credits in lights.

Yeah, I got their fucking lights right here, and their credits too. Let the bastards squeal. The pictures are photoshopped.

Maybe, but I don't think of it that way. I don't think anything was meant to happen. If there's a cosmic consciousness that's greater than we are, I figure that at best it's indifferent. Your destiny becomes apparent to you after it's happened. We like to see patterns and order in the universe and in our lives, so we do. It's a little like numerology, and if that's comforting people will pay attention to it and attach significance to it.

Both PD and I were open to what we found though, even if it was greater than what we were looking for. That's what really stands out for both of us. We had set our sights lower because we just didn't think love was in the cards for us, but when love happened we grabbed it- and we hung on to it.

Thanks for reading them- we had fun writing these! What we could forget, if we didn't remind ourselves from time to time, is how much our meeting changed our outlook and our attitudes.

Thanks for reposting these. I have just spent a very pleasant half hour reading them...and rereading parts...smiling all the way though. I hope you have many more happy years together walking in the woods and maybe even taking in a movie or two.

You're welcome! Thanks for reading them. We had fun with these, writing them. Neither of us means to imply that there's someone out there for everyone, or that the odds on finding a perfect partner aren't long- they are. But if it could happen for a couple of three time losers like us, it can happen for anyone. We got lucky and found way more than we were looking for.
