And I'll say here what I have said elsewhere-
Can anyone explain to me why someone else's 2nd amendment rights supercede my right to be out in public and not get shot and killed?
My condolences on a smaller city's loss of innocence and familiarity for the time being,
    Kk
Can anyone explain to me why someone else's 2nd amendment rights supersede my right to be out in public and not get shot and killed? Since money was given the same rights as people the slope became very slippery. Politics and power have become more important than the people they rules over. So we end up with these incidents and zero response to them from politicians because they re being paid to ignore them.

When the going gets weird, the weird turn pro.

The only thing we have to fear is fear itself.

Thanks, Leo. Everyone here is thinking of them, I'm sure. The fourteen year old girl was thought to be brain dead at first, but she squeezed her mother's hand in the hospital. I hope that indicates she can recover.

Thank you sweetheart. I know just what you mean right now- I've never met any of these people and it's heartbreaking what happened to them. I'd feel bereft as well if something awful befell my friends here.

I also thought of you kids when I heard about it. There are so many of these now I have to wonder why nothing is really happening to stop the carnage. I know it comes down to money and politics. The politics of guns and the mentally ill (at this point that is my guess on the reason why this incident happened). As long as the people don't speak loudly about both situations it is likely to continue. What does that say about our way of governing - where money rules over people?
Most people who suffer from some kind of mental illness are far more likely to be the victims of violence than to be the perpetrators. You can make a strong case that any murderer is mentally ill in a sense, but this appears to be a case where the man was clearly deranged and had no other agenda- so far. We don't really know his thoughts in the months and years preceding this attack.

I don't think we'll ever be able to stop such attacks from someone determined to kill indiscriminately, but we could take steps to make it harder for them to do as much damage. Yet every time we witness an incident like this, we pay lip service to prayer as a remedy and we make temporary noises about proper care for the sick in heart and mind, but the truth is that talk is just a palliative- our Congress has no more intention of spending money on mental health care than they have of trying to regulate firearms possession.

I'm a gun owner myself and I interpret the second amendment in a way quite agreeable to conservatives, but enough is enough. It's decades past time to talk seriously about drastic steps to curtail the carnage.

Why can't these nut jobs just go into a corner & do themselves.
I can't help but say the same thing myself, Rock. Oddly enough, I don't feel all that angry at him yet. Ordinarily I'd be seething. I may get there yet, but I'm still kind of shocked. I can't reconstruct any kind of convoluted thought process that gets me to a place where I can understand why he was motivated to do this, in what twisted way he could conceive of some gain accrued to him. Or, as you say, if he had given up why he needed to take others' lives instead of his own. I'm just stunned.

So glad you guys are safe. Probably adverse effect of some medication. The dude seemed like an average Joe from watching interviews of people who knew him

Glad to hear you two are safe and it wasn't anyone close to you. It's a sad situation when people are killed just for being unfortunate enough to be in the path of a violent nutcase.

The rash of these kinds of cases though doesn't surprise me when the economy has been so bad and peoples lives have been torn apart. It makes it hardest on the people who need the help the most. Then you add in the attitudes of people around the ones who are tipping over the edge. It would be nice to know what pushed him off the edge if for no other reason then to see where things need to be done, if there was anything that could have been done.

Thank you, Kama. That's pretty typical, isn't it? "Guy seemed like an average Joe."

Thanks Tickles. The rash of these cases does surprise me, but I think like you do about it. There's a lot of frustration, alienation and anger out there, and we're like rats in a crowded cage in some respects. I don' t think one thing and one thing only, like gun control, is the answer. It might be part of the answer, but there's more going on here than just a proliferation of powerful weapons. I've begun to not recognize the country I grew up in, and this brought it a lot closer to home.

So senseless.. six people gone, six family's lives changed forever... two more lives hanging by a thread. Such tragedy...

So am I. And we easily could have been. This isn't one of those things we can point to policies to change, I suspect. We can't ever get a handle on every possible contingency. We can't point fingers and place blame. It was random and out of the blue. But it's deeply troubling to us that we're now one more verse in the litany of violent deaths over the last years. I'm having a hard time getting a handle on this. It all seems so pointless.

Certainly it is understandable that you felt like posting something about such a horrible tragedy. I personally think you did a fine job of relating what events of this nature do to a community and to us personally as well. Things just do not seem the same afterwards. Thanks for sharing and putting a personal spin on it.

I just wonder what drives people to do such senseless acts. In both cases no good would come from it... sad really that the only solution the people could come up with is destruction.
It's clearly a sickness, and there isn't any answer that we can understand. It worries me though, and PD too, that there are so many of these incidents. This isn't JUST about gun control. Theres something else going on here, and it's ugly. We'd better get a handle on it.

Humorlife said it very well!
Something similar happened in my neighborhood when I was a teen.
Seeing a victim's son get on the school bus 4 or 5 days later really made me think long and hard about that sort of violence. I wanted to talk to the victim's son.....but.....he had always been shy and after that he was even more so.
There really is no explanation for crazy. Crazy things happen and hopefully we can heal and move on (keep living).
My condolences to t he survivors.

Kzoo?..... Does the swamp still look dark?

This was crazy. There are crimes of passion, and we understand those. There's no reason to this one, and there doesn't appear to have been any particular passion about it- he just killed people he'd never seen before.

That swamp will always look dark and brooding to me. It changed forever on that night.
