I think you are an animal, Cinn, and I mean that in the best of ways! Gracie gets us both going on those really cold days when we'd just as soon sit inside by the stove. I owe her for that. She heals my spirit and repairs my attitude. Become a member now and get a free tote bag.

Skunk cabbage is a strange plant. Besides creating enough heat to melt its way through the frost in spring, it mostly grows downward into the soil. It really fits in, growing in the decay of the swamp. That place is a riot of jumbled fallen trees, rotting logs and all the fungi, moss and other stuff that feeds on it. She spends a lot of the hike doing that. I dawdle to look at stuff and take pictures and she tears through the place on a mission. She does brake for smelly shit though. Then it's my turn to bitch at her. Become a member now and get a free tote bag.

I was wondering what that first photo was, until I read the previous post. .. Interesting. And Gracie is awesome. Love the thorns too. All great photos. Very enjoyable to look at. Read my diary Journal of a Taxi Driver for taxi stories and pictures of flowers and trees.

Last year we had skunk cabbage poking through snow. I love seeing that- it melts a circle around its sprouts and actually thaws the ground so it can grow up. Last March was very cold. We had single digit temperatures the first couple of weeks. This year has been quite mild, so we didn't get the sight of blooms in the snow. Become a member now and get a free tote bag.

Wonderful photographs as always. I honestly thought the first pic was of some baby aliens I prefer 'honest' photographs like this than the ones that have been filtered to death...and whatever else professional photographers do to their pics. As you can tell, I know all the photography lingo "I'm always disappointed when a liar's pants don't actually catch on fire..."

Don't you just love the stance of a dog when they're getting ready to give everyone close by a cold mucky shower!!! ~~Anais Nin~~

Wonderful photographs as always. I honestly thought the first pic was of some baby aliens I prefer 'honest' photographs like this than the ones that have been filtered to death...and whatever else professional photographers do to their pics. As you can tell, I know all the photography lingo Skunk cabbage does seem kind of alien- primordial, anyway. I haven't figured out yet how old it is- none of the sources I've looked at mention anything about it being an ancient plant. It just looks like it should be. Sometimes I've corrected photos for exposure, but it's been to correct mistakes I've made with camera settings. My black dog is awfully hard to photograph unless the light is perfect. But I prefer unenhanced pictures too. The super saturated color of some photography looks like an acid trip to me. That's fine if you're telling a story about an acid trip, but I only talk about acid infrequently at most. Most contests have restrictions on what enhancements you can use....but then, I don't think much of contests anyhow. Beauty is pretty subjective. I've said before I'm not much interested in fine art photography. I just got in the habit of taking a camera along when we hike to share what we see out there every day. If I can get a realistic representation of what we see in nature, I'm very happy with that. Become a member now and get a free tote bag.
