That Red Tail

That Red Tail

Yesterday we hiked our favorite circuit at Al Sabo Preserve. It was warm and sunny and the trees are just beginning to bud. The serviceberry has little vestigial blossoms that haven't quite opened, the flower petals still curled up into just tiny white berries. Woodland violets are blooming in patches and the myrtle is in full purple flower.

PD and Gracie have been taking an early hike in the morning. A tired Gracie is a docile Gracie. She isn't used to doing six or seven miles a day and she's quite obedient when she gets pushed like that.

The highlight of our hike came on the lower Lookout Trail next the swamp. I was dodging a pile of horseshit- a little like navigating the blogs can be lately- and A Red Tailed Hawk launched in front of us. I tried to get a quick shot of him on the fly, and did manage one but it wasn't a good picture. He surprised me by landing atop a broken tree some fifty feet to my left. I went down the bank, trying to keep him in the viewfinder and stopping to get some shots so that if he flew off I'd at least get something. But he surprised me again and posed very patiently and agreeably for as long as I wanted to take pictures. I got to within thirty or so feet of him, and he was up on that pole maybe twenty or twenty five feet. It wouldn't have helped to wade into the swamp- I lost height every step closer to him I took because of the steep bank. I must have taken at least fifty photos, maybe more. What a magnificent looking bird that Red Tailed hawk is!

There is nothing more majestic than being invited into the presence of such creatures. Reminds me of the time I was lunching with a blogger at a quaint restaurant overlooking the Mississippi River and saw not one but two bald eagles regally perched atop nearby treetops. Amazing site indeed!

This guy was all business, and he didn't mind me a bit. He knew he was safe from me and anything else out there. I wish I'd had the sun at my back, and in his face, but that would have taken some wading in muck.

He was waiting for you to pull a rabbit out of your hat.

Nice shots.

Boy, ain't that the truth! I have a terrible time trying to get shots of birds. It helps I think if you're patient and willing to wait. We're always on the move. This raptor was worth waiting around on.

Thanks, Kinky!

Great pics Kzoo. There is a Red Tail (or a family of them) that stop by my place on a regular basis - I have gopher on the menu. They like to enjoy their dinner on top of an ex-racecar/table that I can see out of my living room window. Personally I prefer gopher BBQ'd.

When the going gets weird, the weird turn pro.

How fortunate - dare I say serendipitous? We both had an awesome experience yesterday. You in nature and me at opening day of the new Detroit zoo penguin exhibit.

I'm partial to raptors to begin with. I love sparrow hawks! But we have a lot of Red Tails now, more than when I was a kid. it took a long time for them to recover from all the pesticides in the food chain.

Thanks Rascal. I saw one snag a bunny one day as I was driving to work. we surprised each other- he was diving into a ditch as I was driving by. We both swerved! I think he hung on to the bunny though.

Thanks Tickles. I was really pleased to get these shots. I've got photos of this bird before- he hangs out in that spot quite a bit. None of the other pictures were as good as these though. If he gets a modeling contract I'll probably have to give him a name. Hawky Hawk.

Absolutely beautiful photographs of a majestic raptor. Awesome that he kind of waited for you!!
I am still trying to catch the osprey family out by Spring Point
Light breakwater. When they are there and you attempt a pic they hide in their
nest on the pole

He never did give up! I finally walked away to catch up with PD and Gracie. I think he figured this was his one big chance to be discovered, get a modeling contract and eat steak every night. He was very comfortable. maybe he's getting used to having company- we've seen him on the same perch before.

Thank you dear. He's a beautiful bird. You look at that beak and those talons- he's a hunting, killing machine.

Love your picture. My back yard sometimes resemble a jungle, deer, red fox, musk rats, racoon. Last year they tranqulized a black bear from a block away. I have a pair of hawks that nest in my back yard for years. I see them catching blue jays, robins, baby rabbits and squirrels all the time. By the time I pull out my phone they are gone. But on march 30'th a pigeon flew over my house. Like a guided missile came the hawk out of the tree and caught the pigeon in mid air. Pigeon was about the same size as the hawk. They both fell to the ground spinning like a fan. I got one picture and video of it. Here is the picture of him trying to subdue the pigeon. The video came out much better.

Beautiful bird.

Reading through the comments, I'm reminded how much birds eat other birds!

I am also reminded of some late-night shenanigans. Stephen Colbert's old show showed an eagle, but the caw was from a red-tailed hawk. ... And there's a segment of Last Week Tonight where they make the red-tailed hawk the official raptor of the show. (I found it with an easy search.) The clip shows a hawk grabbing a pheasant in mid air!

Truly awesome to be in the presents of such a majestic creature.

Read my diary Journal of a Taxi Driver for taxi stories and pictures of flowers and trees.

There are a lot of red-tailed hawks up north in the farmland areas here...I always thought they were magnificent but most ppl just compared them to the prolific crow. I am glad you were able to get pics without ending up in the bog!

We have a Red Tail that hangs out in our yard, but that one's a bit standoffish. This guy is in his own domain and he tolerates me very well. It was fun, and funny, the way he postured and preened while I was taking the photos.

Well, there are other birds but I promised myself I wouldn't post their pics on a sex site. There are some fine looking birds walking in that preserve.

It is hard to get close. I finally got shots of a sandhill crane on its nest this spring. Eventually I got too close and it flew off, and then I felt bad about startling it. All was well though- it went back to the nest within a half hour.
