I don't navigate when I tromp through the the blogs, if I step in something on one blog, there will always be another blog where I can wipe my feet. THAT is a good looking bird!!! You should teach it to bring you squirrels.
Well, I try to remember my rubber boots.

And that's a hell of a good idea about the squirrel catching. Those little grey bandits stole my entire pear crop one year. I need a hawk in the front yard. We have a Red Tail that hangs out here but he must have been off duty that night. Even a Red Tail must go out on a bender now and then.

Thanks Pandora! I have some pictures of woodpeckers, pileated and downies, but the little fuckers are elusive. How they peck such big holes in trees is a mystery because they jump around so much. They're positively flighty.

    Beautiful bird.

Reading through the comments, I'm reminded how much birds eat other birds!

I am also reminded of some late-night shenanigans. Stephen Colbert's old show showed an eagle, but the caw was from a red-tailed hawk. ... And there's a segment of Last Week Tonight where they make the red-tailed hawk the official raptor of the show. (I found it with an easy search.) The clip shows a hawk grabbing a pheasant in mid air!

Truly awesome to be in the presents of such a majestic creature.
It's a magnificent bird! A pheasant is a pretty big haul for a Red Tail! I know they aren't heavy, but the hawk, although it's big and strong, isn't any bigger. I watched a couple of pheasants fighting over breeding rights once. It was fascinating to watch. They needed a hookup site like this one so everybody wins...except for the hens.

There are a lot of red-tailed hawks up north in the farmland areas here...I always thought they were magnificent but most ppl just compared them to the prolific crow. I am glad you were able to get pics without ending up in the bog!
We have a lot of them now too, but they weren't so common when I was younger. All that DDT and shit that was being used nearly gave us a real silent spring. I didn't see a mink in the wild till I was twenty. The hawks have come back too. Who the hell wants to live in a world without these creatures?

I'm not one of those photographers who sacrifices everything, like his favorite hiking boots, for a picture. In this case it wouldn't have helped- the best shots were from about three quarters of the way down the bank. Even with waders I'd have got stuck in the deep muck of the swamp. I think the hawk would have left then, figuring I was too stupid to take HIS picture.

Yes! Size matters! The first pileated I saw I thought I was having an acid flashback. They're BIG birds! You should post those pictures- especially the hairy woodpecker.

Thanks Boris! I'm partial to raptors, and especially sparrow hawks. I'm a fan of crows and ravens too. I think birds are a lot smarter than we give them credit for. The ancients knew that birds were wise, and that crows were not just wise but smart asses.

That Red Tail was never scared of me. He watched me, but he never acted a bit nervous. I was surprised at his poise and aplomb.

And, by the way, I'm glad you mentioned the he/her thing. I don't know how to sex a hawk. I reckon if it's done, it's done carefully. You'd probably want to wear a kale condom. (See NaughtyInSO's post Food Porn Health Benefits of Kale.) But anyway, in light of the recent brouhaha over which gender should use which bathroom, it occurred to me that I didn't know the sex of this bird. And I didn't feel I knew it well enough to ask. It would be gauche, if you see what I mean. As far as i'm concerned, this bird can shit anywhere it wants, and I figure the hawk sees it the same way.

Yeah, I think if you wanted to probe genitalia on this critter you'd better pet him a while first. Maybe feed him a pigeon or two.

Wow, very good pictures! It seems as if birds of prey have made a comeback... I do not recall seeing very many as a kid. I saw a red tail get a bird in the backyard this winter, well I saw the aftermath but missed the kill. Was pretty cool, I felt sorry for both birds as it was about 2 degrees that day... one got dinner and one got put out of it's misery I guess. We went on a hike a couple weeks ago and were looking for eagle nests along one of the reservoirs near Indy... did not see any but plan to go back soon to look again. They have made a comeback here in central Indiana as well... pretty cool seeing such a majestic animal.
Thanks Oral. It was a travesty that we came so close to losing animals like this due to all the chemicals we poisoned the earth with. It was a near thing, too. I had farming neighbors who still had some of that poison stockpiled and they were as greedy about their right to kill anything they liked as they were about their second amendment rights. If they were allowed to keep that shit up, before long they'd have nothing left to kill but each other.

Absolutely fabulous pictures. We don't have much in the line of birds of prey round these parts I think the city has frightened them all away. You'd need to go to some of the wilder less accessible parts of Ireland then you might see a few. I do have a fox who pops in and out of my back garden now and then in the quiet of the night but it doesn't hang around for a photo shoot!!!

I really do. Even before the internet I needed places like this. There are days out there when the air is especially clear that it gets very quiet. Walking through parts of the forest you feel the way people feel in cathedrals- in fact I think a cathedral speaks to that very thing in us that loves and needs a forest.

Thank you dear. I have a fondness for foxes too. When I was a kid mowing hay I remember a fox edging out of the woods to watch me. I was screwing up his hunting ground.
