A Birthday Tribute


As flies to wanton boys, are we to the gods; they kill us for their sport.

The empty vessel makes the loudest sound.

The lunatic, the lover, and the poet, are of imagination all compact.

Have more than thou showest, Speak less than thou knowest.

Tomorrow, and tomorrow, and tomorrow,
Creeps in this petty pace from day to day,
To the last syllable of recorded time;
And all our yesterdays have lighted fools
The way to dusty death. Out, out, brief candle!
Life's but a walking shadow, a poor player,
That struts and frets his hour upon the stage,
And then is heard no more. It is a tale
Told by an idiot, full of sound and fury,
Signifying nothing.


Today is, most likely, the birthday of William Shakespeare. It's as good a day as any to celebrate his birth and his life.

It's a busy time here. We have William Shakespeare birthhay; we had the Queen's birthday yesterday. Victoria Wood and Prince have died. And we have Barack Obama stirring things up here! Shirley Temple's birthday has just got forgotten!

Sorry to hog comments to your post, but Barack Obama is sampling a Shakespeare play today, presumably at the Shakespeare's Globe theatre. Here's King Lear.

Why just one day a year? Seems to be too little for someone who had such an impact on most cultures.

He lived in a time of great eloquence, and is revered as the most eloquent of them all. We've done little to improve on his art.

Many many years ago I went to Stratford on Avon with a school tour. We were there for a week and did all the touristy stuff but we also saw a performance of Hamlet and one of A Midsummer Night's Dream. Dame Judy Dench was a young actress then and played the part of Puck....she was brilliant.

I love Shakespeare...a favourite quote of mine is~~

I figure that there are two things I need to study to make my dream of appearing on Jeopardy come true. .. The first one is Latin and the second is Shakespeare.

This is such a good quote. He is surely the most often quoted writer- maybe second to the bible, but that was the work of many writers.I think he stands alone.
