A Type Of Kindness A Poem

Someone told me what
My last lover displayed
It was a type of kindness
But one that was used
To manipulate.

Call it deceitful
Call it dishonest
Call it fake
But it had a purpose.

I was the target
Of some kind actions
They made up
For what I now know
Was a guilty conscience.

He had it in his head
All along
To use me for his needs
To not give me
What I really wanted
Which was simply to be
Someone he could see
Himself with long term.

So he gave me things
Showing his kindness
Like buying off in advance
My forgiveness.

It is hard to contemplate
To wrap my head around this.
That it was all a ruse
To sooth his guilty conscience.

He was not a bad guy.
He gave me things.
He just could not give
Me what I really wanted
Which was simply
More time with him.
