Drink That Water!!

It's important to understand why you were dehydrated. Lack of electrolytes may have been the principal culprit.

Thirst is our body's way of reminding us to drink. When we're low on electrolytes, our *thirst mechanism* shuts down and we sweat ourselves all the way to empty without "remembering" to replenish our water.

As an athlete, I try and stay ahead of the curve with mineral supplements. However, there are lots of foods that do the same: milk, yogurt, soymilk, squash, cheese, green leafy vegetables, pickles, bananas, strawberries, coconut water, and celery.

Regardless, complement your water intake with electrolytes- early and often!
Thanks for the good advice!!

Wow, that's more than just not drinking some water - you had to be majorly dehydrated for that to happen. Glad you recovered and know what to do to avoid it happening again.
Well my potassium levels were also low so I suppose it was a bit of a double whammy. I will certainly make sure I drink plenty of water and take better care.

Boy do you have my sympathy. My BP went so low the day of a doctor's appt I cancelled as I was too scared to drive and he was an hour away. The nurses called me every 15 minutes to make sure I was drinking water and keeping track of the ounces. My electrolytes were so bad I am now on potassium horse pills for two months. DRINK UP Noah is giving us water folks for your health
It's a scary feeling when your blood pressure drops or you pass out! I certainly hope to never experience it again. I had to take those horse pills while in the hospital, plus they hung a bag of something to help with the potassium as well that I received in an IV.

I think my PCP wants me to take the potassium pills for a little while too...

PS is your jib fun? I loved working that shift
I actually like my job. It can be pretty physical when it comes time to pack the stuff up and get it where it needs to go in preparation for pick up or delivery.

I work the night shift mainly because it payed more money. I can sleep pretty good in the daytime, but it sometimes feels like you don't have a life.

Yes I am certainly glad it was somewhere others were around. A tiny bit embarrassing but I can live with it....

I'm sure I will be teased when I go back to work Saturday night....lol

It was pretty darn hot in Philly today, and I think it is supposed to be worse tomorrow!

I was on the beach last week and I decided to go back to my car for my mp3 player (I know, I'm old). I walked across the sand and when I got to the path over the dunes I suddenly started to feel really dizzy. I stopped for a minute, collected myself and walked back to my stuff on the beach and sat back down in my sand chair. A 32oz bottle of flavored water later, I was fine. I too had no idea that I was dehydrated, but I obviously was. I was going to do a shore trip today in the 99* heat, but decided based on last week's experience that I would stay poolside at my apartment complex and sip lots of fluids!

Sorry you had your bad experience and I am glad your daughter talked you into the ER. Hopefully, you will stay hydrated and feeling good the rest of the summer dear!
This heat is no joke, so you probably made the right choice staying put given your previous dizziness. My daughter recently earned her nursing degree so I figured I better listen to her......lol

I think I learned my lesson, so hopefully the rest of the summer will be uneventful in health related matters!

    Hi that can be scary.
Did they say what to do about low potassium? Did that happen because you got hot? Hope your doing good now and be carefull!
    Butch
Yes...it was scary for sure! They gave me some potassium pills, plus an IV bag as well. When it happened I was in air conditioning so heat wasn't a factor I don't think.

Just not enough potassium and hydration to keep my body going....so down I went.

Keep some Gatorade or PowerAde around because sometimes water isn't enough.
    Hope your feeling better.
I'm not the biggest fan of the taste of the electrolyte drinks, but I could suffer through it if I had to....lol

I'm feeling better now....thank you !

    Wow... Scary stuff.
Glad to hear your all right. 😊
Potassium? What has potassium in it? 🤔
Yes, considering it was the first time I had ever passed out...it certainly shook me up a bit!

Some things with natural potassium are avacados, acorn squash, spinach, bananas, sweet potatoes, salmon and a bunch of other things.

Thanks....doing better for sure!

Had my potassium rechecked recently and that was all good and I've been drinking much more (water of course....lol)

Losing some weight (on purpose), and just got shots in my knees for arthritis (family history). Want to get back to the gym for strength training, and some toning up!
