I feel fortunate that at my old job, they only tested if you were suspected of being impaired on the job. No random tests and I don't think they did applicant testing.

As for whether you should accept the job offer...my thinking during these uncertain times would be to try to evaluate if one company is more stable than the other. Sadly, I think a lot of businesses are not going to survive the current recession.

I was thinking, after the current company paid me during the shut down, I'd feel pretty bad jumping ship, now.

That's a good point, I think I'd feel obligated to stick around at least for a while.

It would kind of be equivalent to a mom who leaves a job right after her paid 10 week maternity leave!

I may want to return in time and certain people in certain positions may still be there and it could come back to bite me in the ass.

I haven't heard from the new job and they've been treating me real good at my current job, so I'm leaning towards staying.

Good luck with whatever choice you make if you get the offer. Lots of things to consider given the economy and all. I wouldn't feel to loyal because of the pay you received during the shut down though as it may have been paid for by the tax payers if you know what I mean (if the company got in on the government assistance programs that were to be used to pay employees).

I've never smoked anything or used any drugs so the only thing I have ever had to be careful about was not getting any speeding tickets as most of the jobs I have had involved lots of traveling about. So I guess I haven't given up anything more than a lead foot...

Yes, they have a "use it or lose it" contract with the state/feds so the money had to be accounted for.
